The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), on Monday, revealed that it commenced an investigation into allegations of corruption concerning aspects of the government's response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

ACC confirmed that the commission would take initiative and probe concerns expressed by a number of citizens on social media.

Several people have alleged that top government officials exerted undue influence to reserve seats for friends and family members aboard rescue flights scheduled to evacuate Maldivians stranded abroad. National Tender Board member Ismail Zariyand has also made claims that funds allocated for COVID-19 were being embezzled.

Stating that discussions would be conducted with relevant authorities on halting graft, the commission urged citizens to maintain vigilance and submit complaints after gathering as much evidence as possible on suspected acts of corruption.

Furthermore, ACC stated that efforts were also underway to collect information in order to identify methods of reducing opportunities for corruption and convey the recommendations to state institutions.

ACC emphasized the government's responsibility to maintain accountability concerning policy decisions during a time of crisis, and ensure that such policies are equitable and impartial.

The commission assured that it would not hesitate to fulfill its constitutionally mandated duties to prevent corruption amid the pandemic.
