Assault between 2 expatriate workers in capital leaves 1 injured

Maldives Police Service revealed that an expatriate worker was attacked with a sharp object on Tuesday, during an assault take took place in capital city Male'.

According to authorities, the assault took place on Bodufungandu Magu between two foreign workers.

Police disclosed that the injured 40-year-old male was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for treatment and he was in stable condition.

The reason behind the attack is currently unknown. However, Police have arrested the attacker and confirmed that an investigation is underway.

At a time when the state has implemented various safety measures in the country to contain the spread of COVID-19, migrant workers are also penned inside their living quarters.

Many have described the living conditions for expatriates as being "unhygienic" and "inhumane" with as many as over 20 individuals sharing a single room room in some cases, sleeping in shifts.

The state has stated that discussions are currently underway to decide a course of action for the migrant workers residing in the country.

Male' City Council is presently collecting details on the expatriate workers living in the capital, while the government has announced plans to send the undocumented back to their home countries.
