Criminal Court on Sunday sentenced former armory chief Captain Ahmed 'Papa' Fayaz to two years in prison after he was found guilty of destroying evidence shortly after the blast aboard the presidential speedboat last year.

In addition to Fayaz, two soldiers Moosa Zameer and Ahmed Thiham were also convicted but received only four months and 24 days in prison.

Fayaz was charged with impeding investigators from getting on the speedboat while the other two were charged with destroying evidence before the investigators arrived at the scene.

Former vice president Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison over the blast which has now been confirmed as an attempt to kill the president.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom escaped unhurt but his spouse Fathimath Ibrahim and a presidential aide was injured in the blast.

Two of his former bodyguards also charged in the case received 10 year prison sentences.
