Police investigate sexual abuse of 2-year-old child

Maldives Police Service, on Sunday, announced an investigation into the sexual abuse of a 2-year-old.

According to the police, the crime was reported on March 27 from an island located in the North Central Police Division, which comprises the atolls Alif Alif, Alif Dhaalu, Kaafu and Vaavu.

Asserting that the case was being investigated as a serious matter, the police stated that they had yet to make any arrests.

As per the Child Right's Protection Act that came into effect on 02 February 2020, authorities have not disclosed identifying details pertaining to the victim or the island on which the crime occurred. Further, an ombudsman that can reveal such information has not yet been declared.

A significant number of child sexual abuse cases were reported to the authorities throughout January, following the surfacing of a shocking case involving the sexual abuse of a two-year-old. Based on reports, police have to date, made numerous arrests and have stated that the investigations were underway.
