Man arrested for defying public health emergency guidelines

Maldives Police Service (MPS) arrested an employee of Hondaafushi Island Resort on Wednesday night for travelling between the resort and inhabited island Hanimaadhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll.

According to the Police, the 22-year-old male travelled to Hondaafushi from Hanimaadhoo without permission from the resort management and went back to Hanimaadhoo after collecting his personal belongings from the resort.

Police stated that he was arrested in Hanimaadhoo under a court order. The matter is now under investigation.

Travel between resorts and inhabited islands are currently prohibited under the public health emergency issued by the government over the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

Since, police have arrested seven individuals for violating the instructions of the Director General of Public Health.

Maldives now has 13 confirmed and five active cases of COVID-19, with eight recoveries. So far, only tourists and resort employees have confirmed infections in Maldives with no record of local transmissions within the country. The first Maldivian tested positive for the virus in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The World Health Organization has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected more than 491,200 and claimed over 22,100 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 118,000 have recovered.
