Maldives Police Service, on Monday, stated that a case involving nine individuals arrested during a joint operation run alongside the Drug Enforcement Department (DED) would be forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office within the upcoming week.

The arrests reportedly took place earlier this year, on January 30.

During the operation, officers searched 10 residences in the capital city of Male', and uncovered more than nine kilograms of heroin and approximately four grams of cocaine, in addition to significant amounts of cash.

Additionally, the Criminal Court ruled to freeze the bank account of one of the arrested individuals as it was suspected to carry funds that were acquired through the illegal drug trade.

DED conducted the operation after having received reports of a group working to smuggle narcotic substances into Maldives, selling them on a wide scale.

Eight of the arrested individuals are presently in police custody. Following a hearing, the criminal court released one individual, identified to be a lawyer by profession, on February 5.
