The world would be a better place if people are considerate of each other, said Vice President Abdulla Jihad on Saturday as he inaugurated the International Islamic Conference organized by the Islamic University of Maldives.

Vice President Jihad said that Islamic Society has to be an exemplary society for all others, hence we need to give space for our opposing societies as well. He added that the biggest challenge faced by Muslims are the internal disputes among the Schools of Islam. He said these disputes have led to shrinkage of the value and prestige we have been holding in front of the globe.

Furthermore, the vice president also highlighted the defamation Muslims have to face over accusations of terrorism.

“Worldwide terrorism is now defined as an action done by Muslims against Non-Muslims. However, Islam calls for peace and unity and there isn’t any coercing in Islam,” said Jihad.

Speaking at the function, Chancellor of the Islamic University Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said that thanks to the university, the Maldives is now able to strengthen ties with the Islamic Community.

Dr. Shaheem added that MOUs have been established with the world’s top Islamic universities, including Al-Azhar University in Egypt, a Malaysian University, a University of Brunei as well as one from Saudi Arabia.

Moreover, Brunei’s Islamic University will now deduct their course fees as well as accommodation expenses.

Shaheem also showed interest in stock exchange and business as he said Islamic University wishes to stand on its own feet.

The two day conference will be concluded Sunday. Twenty nine local scholars are participating in the conference with 27 officials from various foreign universities.
