Inmate visiting regulations adjusted over COVID-19

Maldives Police Service announced changes to the procedure to visit inmates in Maldivian prisons following the declaration of a state of public health emergency over the ongoing COVID-19.

According to the Police, the measures would be reverted after the state of emergency is lifted.

Maldives declared a public health emergency under Section 33 of the 7/2012 Public Health Act, on March 12 for a period of 30 days.

Changes to visiting procedure

- Family visits are temporarily halted. Inmates will be allowed a 10-minute phone call with family members every 10 days

- If an inmate displays any flu-like symptoms they will not be allowed to meet their lawyers

- Inmates are advised to avoid meeting lawyers even in the absence of symptoms

- Inmates will be allowed a 30-minute phone call with their lawyers

Maldives currently has 13 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including a tourist couple on a liveaboard, two cases from Anantara Dhigurah, five foreign nationals from Kuredu Island Resort as well as two foreign citizens from Sandies Bathala and Kuramathi Maldives each. No locals have tested positive for the virus as of yet.
