Authorities advised Maldivians against all non-essential travels overseas over the COVID-19 pandemic on Tuesday night.

Speaking at a press conference held at Dharubaaruge convention centre, Mabrouq Abdul Azeez, the Communications Undersecretary at the President’s Office, urged anyone who has to travel abroad to inform the Ministry of Foreign Affairs their reason for travelling.

He highlighted that travellers can now register online at the foreign ministry via its website.

Maldivians currently visiting or residing overseas are to register at the nearest Maldivian embassy or high commission.

Mabrouq assured that the government will assist Maldivians, who are presently in a country banned from entry into Maldives, to return. All returning locals from such nations must undergo a mandatory 14-day period in quarantine.

The foreign ministry advises everyone to contact the ministry via its hotline +960 7983400 for further information on travel.

Authorities revealed that total 73 samples from Maldives have been tested for COVID-19, of which 65 came back negative and two results are pending. Since more than one sample is extracted from some suspected cases, the numbers do not represent the total number of individuals tested.

Six foreign nationals have tested positive for COVID-19 in Maldives so far. Fifteen individuals are isolated at Farukolhufushi and six quarantined at Vilivaru. No Maldivians have tested positive till date.

COVID-19, which originated from Wuhan City in Hubei Province, China, has so far infected over 118,000 worldwide and claimed the lives of more than 4,200 people. From those infected, over 65,100 have recovered from the disease.
