Government announces two new positive COVID-19 cases

The government, on Monday, revealed that two additional individuals tested positive for COVID-19 on Kuredu Island Resort which was quarantined on March 7 following the first recorded cases.

Two foreign employees of Kuredu Resort were the first confirmed cases, followed by two more expatriates at Sandies Bathala resort, located in Alif Dhaalu Atoll that tested positive on Sunday.

The government also quarantined 16 people in the capital city of Male' after they came into contact with an Italian tourist infected with COVID-19 during the two days the individual transited in Male'.

The Italian tourist holidayed in Kuredu Resort and transited in the capital from March 1 to 2 after being unable to depart from Maldives on the initially planned date.

The guest tested positive for the virus after returning to Italy and subsequently informed Maldivian authorities.

There were 1,389 people on Kuredu Island Resort when it was quarantined following the virus outbreak, including 699 tourists, 270 local staff and 420 expatriate staff.

Including the guests at Sandies Bathala resort which was also placed under lockdown, there are 824 tourists quarantined in both resorts as well as local and foreign staff.

Authorities are currently investigating why the guest was allowed to depart the country while symptoms of the virus were present.
