Ministry of Health on Monday, revealed that the Italian tourist found to have been infected with COVID-19 had transitted at capital city Male' for two days before departing to Italy.

Moreover, the tourist was said to have visited a Universal Enterprise Pvt Ltd Reservations and Ticketing Agent in Male'.

Speaking at the press conference held at Convention centre Dharubaaruge, President Office's Communications Undersecretary Mabrouq Abdul Azeez, noted that a contact trace was being conducted and efforts to quarantine one individual who had contact with the Italian is now underway.

Authorities are investigating why the guest was allowed to depart the country while symptoms of the virus were present.

Maldives announced its first confirmed cases of COVID-19 late Saturday, after two foreign employees at the Kuredu Resort and Spa tested positive for the virus. The resort was quarantined earlier the same day, after the Italian guest who holidayed on the island tested positive following their return to Italy.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that two additional expatriates at Sandies Bathala resort, located in Alif Dhaalu Atoll, had tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday.

There were 1,389 people on Kuredu Island Resort when it was placed on lockdown following the virus outbreak, including 699 tourists, 270 local staff and 420 expatriate staff.

In addition to Kuredu, the health ministry announced that 11 individuals have also been isolated on Sandies Bathala Resort. The Health Protection Agency declared later that night that two guests holidaying at the resort also tested positive for the virus.
