Sandies Bathala Island, Alif Alif Atoll is currently under lockdown after an Italian national holidaying at the resort developed COVID-19 like symptoms.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced in the early hours of Sunday that the guest is currently undergoing monitoring and testing.

"Temporary restrictive measures have been initiated in the resort until contact tracing is completed", added the agency.

Maldives announced the first confirmed cases of COVID-19 late Saturday, after two foreign staff at Kuredu Resort & Spa tested positive for the virus. The resort was quarantined earlier the same day, after an Italian guest who holidayed on the island tested positive for the virus after returning to Italy.

The government had also enacted temporary restrictive measures on Summer Island the same day. The quarantine was lifted in the early hours of Sunday after two guests and five staff members, who exhibited suspected symptoms of COVID-19, tested negative for the coronavirus.

Authorities have urged the public not to panic and refrain from enabling the spread of misinformation. Doctors also called on the people to observe good hygiene and best practices in the prevention and management of viral infections, and to seek medical attention at any sign of flu.
