Prosecutors have charged the former defense minister of former president Mohamed Nasheed’s cabinet, Ameen Faisal, with terrorism.

It has not been confirmed over which case has he been charged. However, it has been a while since he was summoned to Maldives Police Service's headquarters for the interrogation over arresting the incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and keeping him under custody in Kaafu atoll Aarah island in 2010.

The first hearing of the case was scheduled for Wednesday but it has now been cancelled.

Ameen was the defense minister and the adviser of the National Security Committee when the current president was taken under the custody of Maldives National Defence Force. He was previously under the custody of Police until the Supreme Court ordered his release.

The Civil Court had later ordered Ameen Faisal compensate the damages caused due to the arrest. However, President Yameen had refused to receive the amount.

Regarding the case, former fefense minister of President Yameen’s Cabinet and the Chief of Defense Force, Moosa Ali Jaleel, was also interrogated by Police. It is unclear whether his case was forwarded for prosecution.
