Govt to begin construction of housing units for Male' residents

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday announced that a housing project to develop 3,000 units in capital city Male' will commence in March.

Speaking at the ceremony to inaugurate the Male' Streetscaping Project, President Solih revealed that the housing project will be conducted in two phases, with 1,700 units to be developed in the first.

Reiterating the administration's pledge to construct over 4,000 housing units in the capital, President Solih said that, based on research, 4,000 units were inadequate to tackle the issue of housing in Male'.

He also noted that his administration would honour the commitments to provide housing through the schemes initiated during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's tenure.

President Solih further acknowledged the many concerns regarding the 'Traveller's Market' and vowed to solve them. A temporary marketplace for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan will also be established.
