China presented the Maldives government MVR 7 million in free aid Sunday for the streetscaping of seven small streets in capital Male and development of a children’s park in the suburb of Villimale.

The agreement was signed by housing minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu and the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Wang Fukang, at a ceremony held in the housing ministry.

According to the housing ministry, the seven streets are small lanes which were recently closed off to vehicles to be developed as pleasant paths for pedestrians. The project is to be completed over the next six months.

The ministry elaborated that benches for relaxation will be established in these lanes along with areas for sports and recreation.

Housing minister Muizzu stated that the government sought suggestions from residents of these streets as to their development and design. The minister said that the materials required for the project have been already acquired and the project will be underway next month.

The project is headed by the ministry’s Public Works Services department to minimise costs.

The minister noted that the squares of Iskandhar Maizaan and Tsunami Memorial Maizaan developed by Public Works Services were gladly received by the public. Hence, he said, the newest project will also be overseen by the ministry.

Praising the beauty of the Maldives, Ambassador Wang Fukang stated that this project which looks to further beautify the Maldives capital will be beneficial to both residents and tourists.

He also lauded the housing minister for various projects conducted in the interests of Male citizens.
