Maldives Police Service, on Friday, arrested a man alleged to have spat on a woman's face to express disapproval for the way in which she styled her hijab.
Police confirmed that upon receiving the complaint in the afternoon, a local 34-year-old male was arrested over spitting on a woman who was walking on the road.
Police assured that the matter is currently under investigation but did not reveal further details.
Local media reported that the woman is an employee at the front desk of a city hotel in Male'. Witnesses at the scene state that the man got upset over the choice of hijab styling worn with her uniform. However, these statements are yet to be verified.
According to posts on social media, the man was seized and handed over to Police by a group of concerned citizens present on the road at the time.
