Maldives Police Service, on Monday, arrested a 60-year-old man for sexually abusing an 11-year-old boy.
An initial arrest concerning the case was first reported on December 9, 2019, made under a court order at 1200 hrs.
The case was reported in the North Police Division which consists of the atolls of Noonu, Raa, Baa and Lhaviyani.
Stating that the investigation was underway, the police reiterated that utmost seriousness is accorded for all cases involving sexual violence against children.
This marks the latest reported assault in a series of child sexual abuse cases that came to light over the past two weeks.
It began with a case that surfaced on January 17, involved the sexual abuse of a two-year-old girl by her grandfather and great-grandfather. The two men have since been arrested on child sexual abuse charges, while the victim's father was taken into custody over negligence allegations.
While the aforementioned case sparked widespread outrage and harsh criticism against the government, public sentiment has remained focused on authorities’ negligence and their failure to take appropriate measures to curb sexual violence against children.
