Police investigate gang rape of 17-year-old girl

Maldives Police Service are investigating the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl by a group of three men.

According to the police, they received reports of the assault around 2015 hrs, from an island in the North Central Police Division which comprises the central atolls of Kaafu, Alif Alif, Alif Dhaalu and Vaavu.

No arrests have been made yet.

Police did not disclose further details, including the island where the gang rape took place, to protect the identity of the victim.

They stated that the investigation was underway and reiterated that utmost seriousness is accorded for all cases involving sexual violence against children.

This is the latest assault in a series of child sexual abuse cases that came to light over the past week.

The first case, involving the sexual abuse of a two-year-old girl by her grandfather and great-grandfather shook the country on January 16, sparking outraged protests and harsh criticism against the government. The two men have since been arrested on child sexual abuse charges, while the victim's father was taken into custody over negligence allegations.
