Principal of Maalhendhoo School Yoosuf Adam who was arrested on Monday last week with illegal narcotics was suspended on Tuesday.

Permanent Secretary of Education Ministry Ahmed Ali confirmed that the principal was suspended but did not disclose the length of his suspension.

Yoosuf was arrested with 5 grams of drugs and remanded by the Magistrate Court in Landhoo, Noonu Atoll, for a period of seven days.

Henbadhoo Court, in the same atoll, released him during a hearing to decide on extending his remand period. However, the reason for his release is unclear.

Local media reports that the drugs were uncovered in a bag Yoosuf was carrying while travelling to his island via speedboat.

Maalhendhoo Councillor Mohamed Shah Moosa stated earlier that drug allegations were not raised against Yoosuf prior to the incident. He also expressed shock over Yoosuf's arrest in a drug case.
