Charges filed by prosecutors less than charges against state: AG Office

The Attorney General's (AG) Office released statistics revealing that in 2019, compared to the number of cases filed by the state, the office had received more charges filed against the administration.

As per AG Office's information, a total of 226 cases were filed against the state. Meanwhile, the AG filed charges for 158 cases.

A total of 388 civil litigation cases were filed, recording a 49.74 percent decrease compared to the 764 cases lodged in 2018. Additionally, four cases did not make it to court.

Of the 226 cases against the state, 78 are ongoing, in addition to the 37 ongoing cases sent for prosecution by the AG Office. State prosecutors represented the state across 1,924 hearings during the previous year.

State institutions including Maldives Police Service, Ministry of Housing, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Tourism received charges against the state.

Moreover, Maldives Customs Service, Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services and the Ministry of Environment were recipients of charges filed by the state.
