Maldives Police Service on Friday arrested two suspects in connection with the sexual abuse of a two-year-old girl in a southern atoll of Maldives.
A day after announcing the investigation, the police confirmed that two elderly men are formally accused of sexually abusing the child.
One aged 62 was arrested at 1505 hours, while the other, 81, was taken into custody at 1525 hours.
Police reiterated that the investigation is ongoing and did not disclose additional information.
The harrowing case of the 2-year-old victim surfaced last Thursday. She has since been removed from her family and transferred to a safe environment, according to Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services.
Posts shared on social media allege that the child's parents were substance abusers, and that she had been raped by her father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Local media Mihaaru corroborated the allegations, based on sources from the island.
However the authorities have yet to confirm or debunk these claims.
