Jumhooree Party (JP) announced that it would hold its internal primary election on February 12 to choose representatives for the local council election slated for April 2020.

The polls will mark the first primary election ever hosted by JP.

The party reveals that representatives will be designated to contest for both atoll and island council presidency and membership. The primary election will also finalise JP representatives that will vie for the presidency of women's development committees across the country.

According to the ruling coalition member, interested party members must apply for candidacy before February 5.

The party finalised the decision to host a primary election before awarding party tickets to its representatives for any election, during a council meeting held in December.

JP Chief Spokesperson Ali Solih attributed the decision to ensure greater stability within the party.

He also expressed his belief that JP would perform well in the council election considering the efforts currently underway.
