Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment on Wednesday hosted an event 'Ran Aharu 2019' to celebrate a successful year in sports.

Vice President Faisal Naseem and Minister of Youth and Sports Ahmed Mahloof attended the ceremony held at Dharubaaruge convention centre.

During this gathering, VP Naseem unveiled the ‘Youth Award’, which will recognise individuals who excel in serving youth and the society through education, skill and workmanship.

Furthermore, he unveiled awards in the field of sports and a civil society award. While the sports award is intended to recognize the achievements of athletes who excel in sports and to mark their sporting achievements on a national level, the civil society award is given to recognize civil society organizations which contribute to the wellbeing of the society through community empowerment, volunteer work and their contribution to the development of the nation.

The Youth Ministry will annually confer these three awards from this year onwards.

Speaking at the event, the Vice President noted that the government held a multitude of programmes during 2019, which were aimed at the development of youth in aspects such as leadership, awareness and several sports competitions.

He also acknowledged that it was an accomplishment for the Maldives to be chosen to host the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) in the year 2023.

"Empowering youth and increasing youth participation in developmental activities were among the administration's first initiatives".

Additionally, he highlighted that promoting healthy lifestyles was one of the very first campaigns initiated by the current government and added that high precedence is given to the development of sports and promotion of healthy lifestyles.
