President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Wednesday expressed grievance over Australia's ongoing bush fire.

In a letter sent to the Prime Minister of Australia Scott Morrison, President Solih stated that it was 'truly shocking to comprehend' the extent of loss to Australia's ecosystems and wildlife, as well as human life, homes and properties.

Further, he expressed sympathies to the Government and people of Australia on behalf of the Maldivian Government and it’s people.

“The damage caused by the fires to habitats, species and the environment of Australia is a bitter global reminder of the effects of human-induced climate change in exacerbating naturally occurring events,”

Highlighting the close friendship between the two countries, President Solih also recognized Australia as a trusted development partner to Maldives.

“The Maldives stands in strong solidarity with the people of Australia and we further affirm our willingness to be part of a broader global effort to address the consequences of the climate emergency."

According to HuffPost, Ecologists at the University of Sydney and WWF Australia estimated that number of animals feared dead in the fires soar over a billion.

Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that the fires have charred at least 8.4 hectares across the country.

As of now, 25 people have died in these devastating fires.
