Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla stated on Thursday that the first step to improving the tourism sector of the country is improving the standards of salary and service charge for the industry's employees.

Also the President of ruling coalition's Adhaalath Party (AP), Imran made these statements defending Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed's controversial take on service charge on December 25.

Speaking at a press conference, the Tourism Minister expressed sadness over the public's complaints of low service charge, claiming that the service charge given to the industry's employees were satisfactory as per available records.

The statement resulted in heavy criticism from resort employees, with some of them calling for the minister's resignation.

In a series of tweets, Minister Imran stated that he could very closely observe the efforts of Minister Waheed to improve the salary and service charge for resort employees.

"From my experience with him in the political arena, I know that he upholds the best interests of the general public", he tweeted.

Speaker of Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed also defended Ali Waheed with a tweet noting that Tourism Ministry has seen various improvements within the past year, adding that he trusted Ali Waheed's judgement.
