Police investigate theft of over MVR 100,000

Maldives Police Service launched an investigation into the capture and mugging of an expatriate after he withdrew more than MVR 100,000 in cash from State Bank of India (SBI).

During the incident, which occurred on December 26 in the capital city of Male', the man was forced into a car after he exited the SBI branch and was taken to a house in the reclaimed suburb of Hulhumale'. It is reported that the total amount of money stolen reaches MVR 130,000.

Several local media outlets report that the victim is employed with a company operating in the tourism industry.

The police did not reveal any additional information concerning the case.

On March 10, an employee of BHM employee was attacked by helmet-clad assailants while he was on the way to deposit the money at SBI. A total of MVR 1.3 million was stolen during the robbery.

The Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances claimed that religious extremists were involved in the BHM theft.
