The Chinese Government issued a Travel Advisory to the Maldives over the risk of Zika virus transmission.
The travel warning issued by the General Administration of Supervision Inspection and Quarantine (GASIQ) recommended Chinese citizens not to travel to the Maldives for a period of three months.
Referring to the notice, some news agencies reported that this was issued on November 1.
China being one of the main tourism markets of the Maldives, this warning comes after the archipelago was listed as a country under risk of Zika.
Moreover, the travel advisory urged its citizens to take preventive measures like maximum coverage of the body to avoid mosquito bites, and advised pregnant ladies not to travel as they are at higher risk of transmitting the disease.
It is noteworthy that 50 tourists who came to the Maldives has been tested for Zika with none of them being testing positive. However, two tourists had been tested positive after they left the Maldives, but the origin of the disease's transmission has not been confirmed.
China was the biggest market for the Maldives' tourism sector over the past five years. However, the total number of tourists from the Asian giant this year has fallen by 13 percent.
Chinese media predicts that this amount will continue to drop in days to come.
