Police crack down on 'drug houses', over two dozen arrests

Maldives Police Service launched a special sting operation targeting 'drug houses', arresting over 37 individuals from five houses in capital city Male'.

During the recent raid on Thursday, authorities searched Lonumidhilige in Maafannu ward was searched.

Police arrested four minors, a couple and an expatriate for suspected possession of narcotics. Two of the minors were placed under house arrest, while the remaining two were remanded for 10 days. The foreign national was also remanded for 10 days.

However, Police later determined the coupe to not be in possession of any illicit substances and released them.

Police did not take the couple to court as they did not possess such substances.

Drug houses are categorised as a residence utilized to shelter drug users and distribute illicit substances.

The five houses raided;

- Fashion Mead, Maafannu ward : 11 individuals

- Nadhee Irumatheebai, Maafanu ward : 4 individuals

- Lonumidhilige, Maafannu ward : 8 individuals

- Velirange, Henveiru ward : 10 individuals

- Memory Villa, Galolhu ward : 4 individuals

Authorities have confirmed that the drug houses operate in cooperation with tenants and owners for financial gain, adding that its sting operation aims to hold parties privy to enabling criminal activities accountable.

Police stated the houses were raided over matters related to illicit dealings.
