Elections Commission (EC) of Maldives stated on Sunday that the MoU signed between EC and the Election Commission of India did not leave any room for secrecy, adding assurances that all elections will be carried out justly and transparently.
The agreement was signed last Friday to improve the relationship between the commissions of both countries. Since, the opposition has raised various concerns and questions regarding the MoU.
Opposition parties accused that the agreement was signed to influence the results of the upcoming Local Council Election. They also believe that India is aiming to gain access to EC's servers.
In response to these accusations, EC's Vice President Ahmed Akram assured that the MoU did not contain any part requiring secrecy, adding that the agreement was signed to improve cooperation between the commissions in two areas.
According to Akram, this included training EC's staff at the Indian commission's institute which specialises in electoral studies and sharing the electoral experience between both commissions.
Elections Commission is currently carrying out the necessary preparations for the Local Council Election scheduled to be held in April.
