The number of tourists to the Maldives spiked in September despite the continuing decline of the Chinese tourism market, statistics show.

According to Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA)’s monthly economic review released Tuesday, the total number of tourist arrivals in September amounted to 101,909. While the record is a monthly drop of nine percent from August, it is a seven percent increase compared to September 2015.

MMA’s review states that tourist arrivals had the highest increase from Europe and the Middle East, though it did not specify by how much.

The average length of stay had decreased to 5.3 days, but increased by two percent for nights in September, while the occupancy had also improved to 64 percent.

Other details such as changes to the tourism market remain unclear as the tourism ministry has yet to publish its statistics for the month of September.
