Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), on Friday, was granted the first Bush Thatcher Freedom Award.
Bestowed by the International Democrat Union (IDU), the award was given in recognition of the party's contributions to democracy in Maldives as well as its endeavors to protect human rights.
MDP Secretary General Anas Abdul Sattar accepted the award at the IDU Forum 2019 which is currently ongoing in Washington DC, USA.
The award was named in honour of American President George H.W. Bush and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Founded in 1983, the IDU is a working association of over 80 conservative, centre and centre right political parties. IDU provides a forum for parties across the world with similar beliefs to convene and exchange opinions on policy and matters of organisational interest.
