The newly appointed Secretary General of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's faction of the divided ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Dr Abdulla Khaleel, declared that the president has activated PPM since he gained full control of the party.
Khaleel, who is also a member of Parliament, made the remark while speaking to the press after the party's council meeting held at Dharubaaruge convention centre late Monday.
He stated that President Yameen has commenced various programmes for party members after the judicial courts handed him control over PPM from his half-brother and party leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who was charged with violation of the party's charter and impeding its effective functioning.
Adding that a lot of new people are showing interest in joining PPM following the president's take over, “this evidences the success [President Yameen] has brought to the party,” said Khaleel.
Moreover, SG Khaleel said that numerous efforts are being made to strengthen the structure of the party in order to provide services closer to the public.
Noting that the Elections Commission will only accept forms from President Yameen's faction, Khaleel said that they will be accepting the applications to run for the upcoming local council elections until November 6.
It is noteworthy that with the Civil Court's order for Gayoom to hand over the party to PPM's adviser President Yameen, all assets, donations and administrative equipment along with candidacy forms were taken from the former official office of PPM to the currently used Activity hub of President Yameen's faction at Dharubaaruge convention centre.
