Two arrested over Meraki vandalism case

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed, on Tuesday, revealed that two individuals were arrested over the vandalisation of Meraki Coffee Roasters.

Although he confirmed that two suspects were apprehended on Monday night, the Commissioner did not disclose any additional information.

Unknown assailants damaged the window of the popular cafe' which is located in the capital city of Male' on Saturday night, and left a threatening note in local Dhivehi Language, warning against crossdressing.

The vandalism occurred in the wake of a social media storm involving a former barista at Meraki, who was criticised for her style of clothing.

Commissioner Hameed also posted statistics of religious extremism cases which occurred between January 1, 2014, and October 31, 2019. These acts include underage marriage, providing financial assistance to terrorist organisations, and being a member of such groups.

The Commissioner stated that there was a capacity to improve the efficiency of institutional and national efforts in managing acts of religious extremism.
