First Lady Madam Fathimath Ibrahim has launched a special campaign to upsurge the membership of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

In a press conference held at Fathimath Ibrahim’s office in capital Male, the President’s Office spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali said that the office will begin accepting membership forms on October 30 onwards from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily.

Adding that they have been receiving complaints of several membership forms which have not been sent to the Elections Commission, Muaz assured that all the forms submitted to the First Lady’s office will reach the EC safely.

It is noteworthy that with the ratification of the new amendments brought to the Political Parties Act, PPM has become the biggest party active in the country. Previously main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) was leading the list with a total number of 46,608. However, as fingerprints were not presented by 18,803 members, their registration forms were rejected and MDP membership decreased by nearly half with only 27,805 members remaining. In the meantime, PPM is leading with a total of 37,633 members by the end of October 2016.

In the midst of the ongoing dispute between the party’s leader Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom and his half-brother and incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, this campaign will also back the candidates of PPM for the next local Council Election.
