President Solih congratulates Sri Lanka's president-elect Rajapaksa

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday congratulated the new president-elect of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, on winning the Sri Lankan Presidential Elections on November 16.

In a message to the president-elect, President Solih highlighted the longstanding friendship and partnership between Maldives and Sri Lanka, and expressed the intent of the Maldivian government to work closely with the new Sri Lankan administration.

The president-elect ran as the candidate from Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP), beating out ruling party candidate Sajith Premadasa with 52.25 percent of the vote, according to the final results. The brother of former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, he had formerly served as a defence secretary.
