The Disciplinary Committee of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to expel the party’s former vice president Alhan Fahmy for actions damaging to MDP and violation of party interests.

Despite the Disciplinary Committee’s decision, Alhan may appeal the case at MDP’s Appeal Committee.

Fifty members of MDP had signed and filed a petition for the removal of the former parliamentarian of Feydhoo Constituency, declaring his behaviour violated the interests of the party.

The Disciplinary Committee also stipulated that Alhan bring in 50 more members to MDP if he wants to be reinstated, with a formal apology to be made to MDP members. The committee added that Alhan cannot run for any positions within MDP for three years after being reinstated.

Alhan had earlier vowed to file a lawsuit should he be expelled from MDP. It is yet unknown whether he has followed up on his word.

Alhan was also prohibited from running for party primaries after the dispute caused in 2014 when Alhan failed the parliament election and subsequently ran for the position privately as an MDP member.
