Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed announced on Tuesday that the goal set for 2019 to bring a total of 1.5 million tourists to Maldives will be achieved within the last week of November.

Speaking to the press at Velana International Airport (VIA) after arriving in Maldives from a trip to Spain, Ali Waheed noted that this achievement is only possible due to the peace and prosperity recently accomplished by Maldives.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced the target of reaching 1.5 million tourists in his 2019 Presidential address.

"This is a very successful year for us. For this, I thank all citizens of Maldives and all those in the tourism industry. The current forecast estimates the possibility of an additional 100,000 tourists, which may place the total number at 1.6 million", he said.

A total of 1.4 million tourists visited Maldives in 2019.

Ali Waheed declared that there are many plans to develop and expand Maldivian tourism. Therefore, many activities will be carried out next year in celebration of Tourism Week.

"Details will be revealed soon of the former renowned players that will visit Maldives and play some matches. Some of these players include those who have won the best player in the world".

Moreover, Tourism Ministry has also decided to host a SCUBA diving world record event, with 500 individuals around a certain designated island.
