The Maldives held its first ever convention on marine science on Thursday.

Fisheries minister Dr Mohamed Shainee was the chief guest at the opening ceremony of the one-day convention, which was organised by the Maldives National University and held in its auditorium.

In his speech, the minister stressed the importance of marine research since the bulk of the archipelago’s environment is the sea, stating that it also makes the Maldives the ideal destination for such studies.

Minister Shainee further urged the senior executives of the university to facilitate research studies for its students in the science department.

Taking part in the convention were 80 marine research scientists, in addition to resorts’ marine department workers and environment protection agencies.

An official of the Marine Research Centre said presentations and papers on marine science and research were submitted in the convention with participants discussing the topics covered.
