Govt to carry out over 900 projects in the atolls

The government is aiming to conduct over 900 development projects outside of the capital in 2020, with a record budget of MVR 10.1 billion allocated for the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP).

The 2020 State Budget submitted by Ministry of Finance to the parliament on Monday revealed that the PSIP allocation is nearly double the amount included in the 2019 budget. It accounts for 27 percent of the overall state expenditures for 2020 and encompasses both new and ongoing projects.

The PSIP projects are conducted under 10 categories, with MVR 3.35 billion allocated for the capital Male' region, while projects worth MVR 2.51 billion will be carried out in the atolls.

According to the budget book, the highest budget among the atolls is MVR 523 million allocated for Addu. Other major PSIP budgets include MVR 486 million for Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, MVR 362 million for Haa Dhaalu Atoll, MVR 332 million for Thaa Atoll, MVR 309 million for Raa Atoll, and MVR 228 million for Fuvahmulah.

Development projects in the sectors of housing, environment, social and industrial work are to be carried out in every atoll in the coming year.
