The government allocated MVR 600 million in the 2020 State Budget to commence construction of 20,000 housing units in the coming year.
The development of 20,000 housing units in various regions of the country is a key pledge of the current administration.
Ministry of Finance assured that the housing units will be developed across other islands as well as in capital Male' City. However, the ministry is yet to finalise the islands for the project.
In addition to the MVR 600 million, the government allocated MVR 359 million to finance ongoing housing schemes, including projects initiated by the previous administration.
The government has proposed a 2020 budget of MVR 37.5 billion to the parliament, which allocates a total of MVR 1.3 billion for housing.
