Italian airline 'Air Italy' on Wednesday, resumed flights to Maldives following a two-year hiatus.

Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) welcomed the inaugural flight conducted by Air Italy's long-haul Airbus A330 by a ceremonial water salute. A reception held to greet the flight crew was joined by MACL's Acting Managing Director (MD) Moosa Solih and Italian Honorary Consul Marazzi Giorgia.

The direct flights from Milan were specially curated for the winter holiday season and are scheduled to fly three times a week.

Honorary Consul Giorgia stated that Air Italy's decision to resume flights to Maldives is indicative of a strengthened friendship between the two countries.

Noting Italy as one of the major contributors to tourist arrivals, MACL's Acting MD stated that Air Italy's flights to Maldives will increase arrivals by "two-fold".

Establishing itself as the third-largest source of holidaymakers visiting Maldives, approximately 92,000 Italians have visited the country in 2019 till August.

In addition to Air Italy, Italy's flagship carrier 'Alitalia' flies direct to and from Rome, three times a week.
