President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Thursday, assured that Maldives would continue to promote multilateralism, international cooperation and understanding to further peace and prosperity.

He made the remarks on the occasion of the 74th United Nations Day, marked on October 24. UN Day commemorates the anniversary of the United Nations Charter and has been celebrated since 1948.

The president stated that Maldives strongly believes in the United Nations, the principles and spirit of its Charter as well as the belief that every UN member possessed the ability to unlock the true potential for peace, progress and prosperity.

Furthermore, President Solih reiterated Maldives' commitment to the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development, including the Paris Agreement, Addis Ababa Action Agenda and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. He described the agenda as a holistic framework for the dignity of all and for a better life in a safe, healthy and peaceful world.

"Despite the challenges we face, we are committed to solving the complex problems of our time through understanding, shared knowledge and multilateralism", he declared.

President Solih delivered historic address at the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September, becoming the first Maldivian leader to speak at the UNGA in seven years.

The address demonstrated the incumbent administration’s commitment to returning to the international arena and engage with the global community through a sound foreign policy as well as pursuing greater bilateral and multilateral engagements to further the country's interests and priorities.
