Speaker of Parliament and former president of the largest party in the ruling coalition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), announced that he would run for the same position in the upcoming party elections.
The party opened applications to run for the vacant posts of President and Vice President on Monday. The election is scheduled to take place on November 22.
Interested individuals can submit their forms before 1200 hrs on October 19.
Nasheed did not reveal any further details regarding his plan to run for a second term as MDP president. However, in a tweet, he expressed hope that MDP members will support and vote for him.
Shortly after Nasheed's announcement, supporters launched a campaign on Monday night, on behalf of the prominent political figure.
