President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Monday, released a statement over a controversial report published by the human rights NGO Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN) dubbed ‘Preliminary Assessment on Radicalisation in the Maldives’ in 2015.
In accordance with Article 10 of the constitution, "observing and respecting the holy tenets of Islam is a fundamental facet of Maldivian society", asserted the president.
Prohibiting any attempt to slander and tarnish Islam, President Solih iterated that allegations against MDN will be "thoroughly investigated" and guaranteed appropriate measures against the NGO.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs also stated that MDN's report contained written accounts which contradicted the tenents of Islam and handed the matter over to the police, who have launched an investigation.
MDN has since removed the report from its website and issued a public apology.
