Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid on Sunday participated in the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Group of 77 (G77), which was held on the sidelines of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister Shahid highlighted that G77 pledged to advocate to transform the international economic system to a more inclusive one, reduce inequalities, and promote the idea of common yet differentiated responsibilities to create a more prosperous and just world.

In his remarks, he also underscored the importance of G77 ensuring that commitments made under the Paris Agreement, 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, and the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction translate into meaningful action, in order to protect the livelihoods and wellbeing of people.

"By working together, we can achieve our ambitious development agenda and our path to lasting peace and sustainable development can be fully realised", said the minister in a tweet.

The G77 member states adopted a ministerial declaration at the end of the meeting.

G77 is a coalition within the UN, comprising of 134 developing countries. The coalition intends to promote collective economic interests and enhance their joint negotiating capacity.

The foreign ministry noted that Maldives plays an active role within G77 in leading negotiations on climate change and environmental protection.
