Minister Shahid, China Vice President discusses bilateral relations

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan, on Thursday, discussed the diplomatic relationship between their two respective countries at a meeting held at the Ziguang Pavilion, Beijing.

Vice President Wang and Minister Shahid both agreed upon the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation in order to achieve mutually beneficial development goals.

The Minister congratulated Vice President Wang on the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. He also commended President Xi Jinping and China's government for attaining economic growth and securing social development for the Chinese people.

Highlighting the importance of China's role as a development partner to Maldives, the foreign minister reiterated the government's commitment to the One-China Policy.

Vice President Wang acknowledged Maldives' importance as a partner in the Belt and Road initiative.

Minister Shahid is currently on a two-day diplomatic mission to China in response to an invitation from State Councillor and Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi.

The foreign minister is accompanied by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel, Foreign Secretary Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed, Director of Communications Miuvaan Mohamed and Assistant Director Maryam Bassama Farooq.
