The Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure, on Wednesday, contracted a Singaporean company with the development of Male' North Habour and the masterplan for Gulhifalhu, Kaafu Atoll.

The ministry stated the name of the company to be 'HQ'.

The agreement was signed at the Maldivian Embassy in Singapore.

According to the planning ministry, the harbour project is allocated a budget of USD 650,000 (MVR 10 million) and eight months.

However, the ministry's media official Mariyam Eana Maajid disclosed that the budget for compiling the Gulhifalhu masterplan was yet to be finalised and approved.

During the Maldives Partnership Forum held in July, the government unveiled plans to develop the Greater Male' Industrial Zone. The USD 488 million (MVR 7.5 billion) project will involve relocating the commercial harbour from Male' to Gulifalhu as well as shifting all warehouses in the capital to Thilafushi.

The islands of Male', Vilimale', Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu will also be linked via bridges.

The project, intended to alleviate congestion in Male' by diverting cargo traffic, also proposes linking Male', Vilimale', Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu.
