Police have launched an investigation after a six month old baby under state care died on Monday.

Police spokesperson confirmed that the death was reported by the state run children's shelter in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale around 11am Monday.

According to the spokesperson, the baby was declared dead by doctors.

Mihaaru understands that the baby had difficulty breathing and was rushed to the hospital.

Funded by a UAE businessman, the special shelter for children under the age of nine was opened last year.

Around 85 children under state care are presently housed in the facility.
