Tourist arrivals up, China market down in August

The number of tourist arrivals in the Maldives in August had increased by 1.9 percent despite an 11 percent drop in the archipelago’s largest market of China.

Tourist influx during August amounted to 112,282 compared to 110,144 last year.

According to the statistics released by the tourism ministry on Friday after a two-month delay, the highest number of tourists had still hailed from China despite the declining market. At 36,217 visitors from China, the Asian super power dominated 32 percent of the market share. However, 2015 had recorded total 40,850 arrivals from China in August.

Statistics show that the second highest number of tourists had hailed from the United Kingdom at 8,852, which is an increase of 13 percent from last year. The UK is followed by Germany with 6,869 arrivals, which a drop of 10 percent from 2015.

The statistics indicate that the majority of visitors hailed from the Asia Pacific region including China, with a total of 57,679 tourists which is 51.4 percent of the total amount.

Total tourist arrivals by the end of August was at 842,625 which is a 2.3 percent increase from last year.
