Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid is to undertake an official visit to China from September 19-20, on the invitation of his Chinese counterpart and state councillor, Wang Yi.
This is the first visit of the foreign minister to China since he assumed office.
According to the foreign ministry, Shahid is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Vice President Wang Qishan, and hold bilateral talks with Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
The two top diplomats will review the gamut of bilateral relations and discuss areas to further strengthen the historically close ties between Maldives and China.
Minister Shahid was initially scheduled to undertake his first official visit to China last June. However, the trip was postponed over various reasons.
The foreign ministry noted that China is an important partner in the development of Maldives. The government reiterated its commitment to its One China Policy and support for the Belt and Road Initiative.
